Krishna Avanti School

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply?
The School is open to applications from all - faith or non faith based applications. Parents applying on faith-based criteria can have their Supplementary Information Forms signed by any of the recognised Hindu temples. Whilst priority is given to Hindu children (see the Admissions section) children of other faiths or none are also very welcome to apply.

What about fees?
The School is a Voluntary-Aided state sector school - not a private school - which means that there are no school tuition fees.

Why a Hindu School?
In the past there were voluntary-aided schools in the UK for each of the six major world religions except Hinduism. This meant that, unlike parents of any other religion, Hindu parents did not have the choice to send their children to a Hindu state faith school. It seems only fair that parents of every faith should be given an equal opportunity with respect to the education of their children.

Why in Harrow?
Harrow has the highest Hindu concentration of any borough in the United Kingdom. Harrow is home to over 40,000 Hindus. This represents 19.6% of the Harrow population compared to 47.3% Christian, 6.3% Jewish and 7.2% Muslim. This makes Hindus the second largest religious group in Harrow, and the largest ethnic group.

How big is this school going to be?
The School proposes to be established as a one-form entry, mixed primary school with attached nursery. The School will open one year at a time, beginning with a Reception class. It will add 30 pupils per year until year 2016 when it will have the nursery and 210 primary school pupils.

Who is behind this proposal?
The School is promoted by an independent charity, I-Foundation (www.i-foundation.org) whose aim is to promote sustainable projects that are based on Hindu culture and philosophy and integrated within the local community.

Who is the faith partner and what is their role?
The School is working the ISKCON UK as the official faith partner. The role of the faith advisor is to provide advice to the School on aspects of how the Hindu faith can be integrated and taught within the School. The suggestions of the faith advisor are not binding on the School – the governing body will be the final decision making power.

Why this Site?
The William Ellis Playing Fields on Camrose Avenue in Edgware was suggested to I-Foundation as a possible site by Harrow Council. The site is open space and under Harrow’s development plan, new schools can, in principle, be established on such open space. The site is also located within an area heavily populated by Hindu families, thus catering to the needs of a large portion of local residents.

What about Traffic?
A key advantage of the site’s location is that because it is located within an area with a strong Hindu population, we hope that many of the children will be able to walk to school. This may well reduce the overall burden on local roads since Hindu parents driving their children to schools located further away would be able to send them to a local faith school.

I-Foundation has also commissioned a green travel plan and a traffic study. This information helps inform possible measures to mitigate the impact of the development in the local area.

What about Belmont Football Club?
Belmont Football Club is supportive of the concept of using part of the site for the School premises and will benefit from a Section 106 £500,000 contribution towards improving their facilities.
